What is the difference?
The biggest difference between university and an apprenticeship is how you learn and gain experience.
At university, you generally study full-time towards a degree before entering the workplace. You will attend lectures, complete assignments and exams, and spend several years developing your knowledge of your chosen subject.
An apprenticeship combines work and study. You are employed by an organisation, receive a salary and gain practical experience while completing training towards a recognised qualification.
Why choose an apprenticeship?
One of the biggest advantages of an apprenticeship is that you don't have to choose between getting a qualification and getting work experience, you can do both!
Earn while you learn
As an apprentice, you are an employee. This means you receive a salary while completing your training. Instead of paying to study fulltime, you are earning while gaining a qualification and developing your career.
Gain real workplace experience
An apprenticeship gives you the opportunity to experience what it is actually like to work in your chosen industry. You'll learn from experienced colleagues, develop your confidence and build skills that you can use throughout your career.
This experience can also be a huge advantage when looking for future employment.
Gain a recognised qualification
Apprenticeships aren't simply about working. You'll also complete structured training and work towards a nationally recognised qualification. There are apprenticeships available at different levels, meaning you can continue developing your skills and progress to higher levels as your career develops.
No university-style tuition fees
For eligible apprentices, the cost of apprenticeship training is funded through government funding and/or the employer. This means you can gain a qualification without taking on l university tuition fee debt, while also earning a wage.
What about university?
University can be an excellent choice for many people and is particularly important for careers where a degree is required.
It also gives you the opportunity to focus heavily on a particular subject and develop academic and independent learning skills.
However, university can be a significant commitment. You may spend several years studying before entering full-time employment, while also having tuition and living costs to consider.
For some careers, university is the right route. But for others, an apprenticeship can get you into the workplace sooner while still allowing you to gain a qualification.
